How to Make a Meaningful Baby Shower Gift for Dad Using Sublimation

Personalized gifts always stand out, and this project takes it one step further by combining custom sublimation with creative gift filling and wrapping. The result? A one-of-a-kind fatherhood baby shower gift that’s thoughtful, useful, and visually impressive.

For a work baby shower, we still went the pink route, but “A Baby Is Brewing” was a fun twist on traditional baby themes — and a perfect way to celebrate dad.

This is a great gift idea even if you don’t have sublimation supplies yet. A frosted mug paired with creative filling and thoughtful wrapping can still make a big impact. Sometimes, the presentation is just as meaningful as the craft itself.

  • Sublimation does require some upfront supplies, but it’s absolutely worth the investment if you enjoy creating high-quality, personalized gifts.

This project is one of my favorite ways to create something meaningful for dad — whether you’re working with minimal supplies or going all-in with sublimation.

Supplies Used in This Project

(These are the supplies I personally use and recommend.) You don’t need every item on this list to make this project work — start with what you have and build from there. *required

  • Frosted glass mugs * (sublimation-ready) from Amazon
  • SVG artwork * (fatherhood or male baby shower theme) from Etsy
  • Sublimation printer & sublimation ink *
  • Sublimation paper*
  • Heat-resistant tape
  • Mug press or convection oven (designed for sublimation)
  • Lint-free cloth & rubbing alcohol
  • Heat-resistant gloves
  • For Filling & Wrapping:
  • Cellophane gift wrap
  • Ribbon or twine
  • Shredded paper or tissue
  • Small filler items (see ideas below)
  • Gift tag or mini card

Quick tip:

If you’re design-savvy, you can also create your own artwork using Canva.

Step One: Prepare the Artwork

Whether you design your own art or buy it, you’ll need your art in SVG format. Open your SVG file in your design software (Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, or similar).

Tips:

  • Resize the art to fit the flat printable area of the mug
  • Mirror the design before printing
  • Keep designs bold—frosted glass looks best with strong contrast
  • Print your design on sublimation paper using sublimation ink.

Step Two: Prepare the Frosted Mug

  • Clean the mug thoroughly with rubbing alcohol
  • Let it dry completely
  • Wrap the printed sublimation design tightly around the mug
  • Secure with heat-resistant tape

Step Three: Sublimate the Mug

Using your mug press or convection oven, follow the manufacturer’s temperature and time guidelines (commonly around 380–400°F for 180–240 seconds, depending on equipment).

Once complete:

  • Remove carefully using heat gloves
  • Let cool slightly
  • Peel away the paper to reveal the finished design

✨ The frosted glass gives the artwork a soft, upscale look that feels especially gift-worthy.

Step Four: Fill the Mug for Extra Impact

Turn the mug into a gift experience by filling it with themed items. Layer shredded paper or tissue inside to keep everything visible and secure.

  • Rolled baby socks
  • Mini snacks or candy
  • Coffee packets or tea bags
  • “Dad jokes” card
  • Small pacifier or keepsake

Optional Gift-Wrapping

Don’t forget to elevate this gift with exceptionally fun wrapping!

  1. Place the filled mug in the center of a cellophane sheet
  2. Gather the wrap above the handle
  3. Secure with ribbon or twine
  4. Add a gift tag or personalized note

The clear wrap shows off both the custom artwork and the thoughtful contents, making the presentation feel boutique-level.

Finishing Touches

Sometimes I like to create multiple sublimated items as a matching set. In the picture you’ll notice a sublimated beer opener (to match the beer glass). They made a great set. Want to make more? You could include:

  • Sublimated beer bottle opener
  • Custom beer cozy for cans
  • Dad coasters personalized to match

Why I Love This Project

This type of project doesn’t just create a gift—it tells a story about celebrating fatherhood in a creative, personal way.

  • Fully customizable for any theme
  • Budget-friendly but high perceived value
  • Perfect for baby showers, Father’s Day, or keepsake gifts

Final Thoughts

Sublimation projects really excite people. The quality feels elevated, and everyone loves seeing their name or role proudly displayed. This might not be the most expensive gift at the party — but it’s often the most memorable.

I’d love to see how your project turns out! Feel free to share your results, and don’t worry — I’ll be diving deeper into sublimation projects soon.
